Pack 28 has gone green! Please take note of the green and yellow recycle in in the back parking lot of the church near the playground.

This recycling campaign is a joint effort of Pack 28 and the Bower Hill Community Church. The church has graciously allowed us to place the bin in their lot AND claim the earnings paid for each pond of material donated.

We would like to urge all Pack 28 participants to dispose of school papers, junk mail, newspapers, magazines, catalogs in our recycling bin.

Encourage your friends, neighbors, and other family members to get involved too. Are you on Facebook? Got FB friends in Lebo? Write a note on your wall and spread the news.

Aside from the obvious environmental benefits, you will be supporting our cub scout pack and our sponsor, the Bower Hill Community Church.

Also, since Mt. Lebanon only recycles every other week, this will help reduce the load put out on the curb and the build-up you may experience over the two week period.

It’s a win-win.

Joining a Cub Scout pack can be a little overwhelming and we would like to take this time to break down what membership means for you and your scout.

Each scout joins a “den” of boys in his grade/age level. A den is a small group of boys of the same grade or age level . If we have enough boys, we may have more than one den per grade level. Each den is lead by an adult Den Leader who are responsible for planning and conducting each den meeting. Tiger scouts attend all scout activities with their adult partner.

Pack 22 has four dens for boys in grades 1 through 5.

1st grade: Tigers 2nd grade: Wolves

3rd grade: Bears 4th and 5th grade: Webelos

All those dens together make up our pack, Pack 28

The dens typically meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month, with pack meetings held on the last Thursday of the month. At the meetings, the boys will receive awards they have earned and work on activities related to the scouting requirements for their den while the adults will get information on upcoming events. The meetings are family friendly, parents and siblings are encouraged to participate. The default meeting location is at the Bower Hill Community Church on Moffatt Rd, but some meetings will be outdoors, field trips, or service projects at other locations.

It us understood that Cub Scouts is probably one of many activities that your son is involved in, so it is not expected that you will attend every meeting. We publish the theme and activities of each meeting so that you can gauge interest and know what requirement related activities will be covered.

Who Runs the Pack?

The pack is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. We are always looking for people to help out and have large and small jobs for every family.

The Pack Committee develops budgets, approves expenses, arranges for facilities and conducts overall planning. Regis Wintermantel is our Committee Chair.

The den leaders are most directly involved with the cub Scouts. Brian Peltz is the Cubmaster (pack “den leader”).

An adult member of each Cub Scout household (not including Tigers) is encouraged to participate in a volunteer position or serve on a committee. The quality of our pack is a direct reflection of the adult participation.

Pack 28 generally tries to fill several postions: den leaders, committee members, and several activity organizers (filed trips, Blue and Gold Banquet, Pinewoord Derby, Scouting for Food, etc.).

What Does it Cost to Join? What Does that Money Pay For?

The membership fee for 2011 is $55 which breaks down roughly along these lines:

$20 national registration + insurance

$4 national registration for adult volunteers

$5-20 for advancement patches, pins, and other earned awards

$remainder: Pinewood derby cars, track maintenance, banquet supplies, and general meeting supplies, etc.

Each age level has a book that describes the program and activities each boy must accomplish to earn the rank patch. These books are $6-$13 each new, but usually are available for less at used book stores, or the information is available free online at several web sites.

Individual activities or field trips may also have separate fees (i.e. Pirates games, Washington Wild Things games, summer camp etc.)

Cub Scouts participate in a popcorn sale in Sept/October to raise money that go into personal accounts to pay for any scouting related expense (pack fees, activity fees, uniform purchase, etc). The popcorn sale is the primary source of revenue for the operating budget, although other fundraisers are run as needed.

What are the Uniform Requirements?

There are some official scouting events where uniforms are required, but for nearly all pack activities uniforms are not required. Some boys do choose to wear them however. We plan to offer Class B uniforms (Pack 22 t-shirts) at some point this year.

The official uniform is the following:

Tiger, Wolf, and Bear dens wear the official blue shirt, den neckerchief, and slide with unofficial blue pants, jeans, or shorts.

Webelos wear the official blue or tan uniform shirt, Webelos neckerchief and slide, with unofficial blue pants, jeans, or shorts. If you are starting Cub Scouts as a Webelos, go with the tan shirts as this is the same shirt worn at the Boy Scout level where the boys will advance too withing a year and a half.

All scouts wear the Greater Pittsburgh Council shoulder patch (2011 – this will be changing very soon), Pack 28 numerals, WOSM (purple circle with fleur de lies)

Hats, socks, belts, pants, etc. are optional.

Uniforms and accessories can be purchased from Dunhams in Bridgeville (limited selection) or the Flag Plaza Boy Scout store located across from Mellon Arena. A new uniform will cost in the neighborhood of $50. Second hand stores often have uniforms and the pack has a small amount of uniform pieces available for free.

If you are interested in joining Pack 28 please contact us by filling out this simple form.

No boy will be turned away for lack of uniform or funding. Please let us know if you need assistance.
